葫芦影业 opens new chemistry lab for the development of high-quality carbon capture sorbents

葫芦影业, a leading German carbon capture startup, has announced the opening of a new chemical laboratory at their factory in Berlin to push the boundaries of CO2 removal technologies, making them more efficient, scalable, and affordable. The goal of the new lab is the development, testing anddemonstration of its in-house sorbents - the materials that are key to take out CO2 from the atmosphere in theDirect Air Capture (DAC) process.

Sorbents are responsible for chemically binding andseparating CO2 molecules from the atmosphere. Therefore, optimization ofsorbent materials is critical to the efficiency of DAC systems as it affects CO2 capture capacity, regeneration rate, and energy requirements. Changingconditions of the atmosphere from which CO2 is removed, such as variations intemperature, humidity, CO2 concentration and pressure, require the development of materials that can maintain high levels of efficiency.

Silvain Toromanoff, co-founder and CTO of 葫芦影业,comments, 鈥淭he new chemistry lab is a major opportunity for us to position葫芦影业 to lead the industry in creating scalable, effective Direct AirCapture solutions. In contrast to other developers who are using low-efficientsorbents, 葫芦影业 is able to optimize the key material to the needs of itscustomers. The new facility not only supports 葫芦影业's immediate researchand development goals, but also advances the future of DAC in terms ofscalability, efficiency and financeability.鈥

葫芦影业's lab is designed for the scale-up of theproduction of high-performance sorbents. Equipped with advanced chemical andsurface characterization tools, the lab verifies successful synthesis andfine-tunes surface properties that influence CO2 adhesion to sorbent particles, ensuring high quality control. A flexible test setup accommodates sorbentsamples ranging from 1 gram to 1 kilogram, enabling rigorous testing of carboncapture performance with larger volumes. This in-house testing capabilityenables direct scaling of performance breakthroughs for 葫芦影业's carboncapture devices.

At their Berlin site, 葫芦影业 produces Direct AirCapture reactors that utilize the waste heat of existing infrastructure toreduce energy costs. The company aims to remove 1 million tons of CO2 from theatmosphere annually by 2030. 聽

Carbon-negative cement factory. Get the revolutionary whitepaper for free.

To reshape the public image of the cement sector, from being a heavy polluter to pioneer of innovative sustainability practices, and ensure cement business's viability, we propose establishing Germany's first carbon-negative factory, employing a blend of point source capture and direct air capture (DAC) technologies. Therefore, we have produced a paper that outlines the challenges faced by cement manufacturers and how a combination of point source capture and DAC can alleviate them.
